year," I said, "you can have a
summer birthday"
In March, Danny's birthday
came. It was gray and blustery,
similar to the day on which
he'd been born. Although Dan-
ny's grandparents were coming
over in the evening for cake and
ice cream, I prepared him for a
quiet celebration.

performing magic tricks, singing
silly songs, making my child
laugh.

birthday. About 20 boys had a
picnic in our back yard, played
basketball on our driveway, shot
some miniature golf and licked
ice cream cones that melted in
the sun.
After that, Danny returned to
having indoor birthdays, taking
his friends to a hockey game or
an archery range. But no cele:

me than the one on a grey day
when a clown came knocking
at our door. El
