NOVEMBER
the best baby sitter, settling a
child in front of the set to watch
a special video may do the trick
when it comes to getting the
youngster to lie quietly.
Even TV may not help when
it comes to pills, though, which
are universally despised by chil-
dren. Dr. Snider suggests asking
the pediatrician for medications
that don't require doses three
times a day. Some of the long-
standing, tried-and-true antibi-
otics require only two daily
doses.
If that doesn't work, mix the
medication with a tablespoon of
applesauce or juice. Combining
with a larger amount of juice
may mean the child won't get
the whole dose if he doesn't fin-
ish the concoction.
Some children can make it
through the day with the
promise of a reward. Older boys
and girls who have to take a 1 0-
to 14-day course of antibiotics
may find it easier if they follow
a star chart.
To make a chart, Dr. Wasvary
suggests taking a sheet of paper
and drawing a row of boxes,
one for each day of treatment
Mark each successful dose with
a star. At the end of the week,
give the child a small present
for his achievement
"This works better with old-
er children," she said. "They
can have fun counting the days
they have left and celebrating
the end with a reward."
But most of all, the mothers
agreed that just holding a child
when he doesn't feel well can
be the best medicine. -
"Even if it just means holding
a cool washcloth on a hot fore-
head, nothing beats a parent's
attention and care," Dr. Snider
said. 0
