TRAVEL BARGiatt415 Do It for You.... TO, Own Your Own Travel Business! Synagogue, the Dohany Street Synagogue that is presently be- ing restored, that I was drawn. And as at every other Jewish house of worship that I have vis- ited the world over, the security was very tight. The first thing I noticed was the exquisite mosaic work on the floor. Stairs leading to the large ark are covered with Oriental , rugs. On the eastern wall are pic- 1 —, tures with symbols of the 12 tribes. The anteroom is sur- rounded by carved wooden rail- ing with the pulpit in the center. Behind is the Torah reader's table; on the side, the ornate chairs of the magistrates. In the courtyard is a memori- al plaque to the murdered Han- na Senesh, who lived in Palestine and volunteered to organize Jew- ish resistance in Hungary; and a short distance away is the Weep- mg Willow Memorial on the spot where the gate of the ghetto stood and where several thousand Jews share a common grave. The monument in chromium steel is shaped like a powerful willow tree. Its trunk is an in- verted menorah, the end of each of the eight branches is marked with a scar. New branches are growing and around each new shoot are 15-20 leaves. Names of those who perished are engraved on either side of the leaves. It was set up by the Emmanuel Foun- dation with the efforts of actor Tony Curtis, a Jew of Hungari- an descent who is the honorary chairman. I sat in the garden of the syn- agogue on an unseasonably warm day in May and watched the early morning sun cast light on the leaves of the memorial. It was an affirmation. Communi- ties do not survive on memories, but rather on beliefs and the peo- ple who hold them. Now that there are synagogues and Jewish organizations, kosher restaurants and Jewish schools in Budapest, it is apparent that the thousand-year roots of Hun- garian Jewry that were brutal- ly cut and burnt see new growth. As a Jew in a foreign land, I once again felt a connection. • Ability to earn over 90% of commissions • Unlimited access to computer reservation system via our homepage on the Internet • Low franchise fee • Fully-dedicated support staff • Training and marketing assistance COLORADO LAS VEGAS ORLANDO $ horn The JCC will sponsor the fol- lowing trips.
