both parents have a history of
bed-wetting, their children have
a 68 percent chance of being
bed-wetters; if only one parent
was a bed-wetter, there is a 44
percent chance the child will be
one, too.
But there are ways parents
can help alleviate this stressful
situation, according to Marc
Cendron, M.D., a pediatric urol-
ogist at Dartmouth-Hitchcock
Medical Center:
Explain what is happening to
the child. He should understand
that bed-wetting is a medical
problem.
Change the child's habits.
Avoid liquids before bedtime, as
well as foods and drinks con-
taining caffeine (a diuretic).
Never belittle or admonish
the child.
If the child suffers from con-
stipation, treat that. It may clear
up the bed-wetting problem.
Mention the problem to your
child's pediatrician. She may
need to rule out other medical
conditions, such as diabetes or
urinary tract infections.
The doctor also may prescribe
DDAVP Nasal Spray, a syn-
thetic analog of arginine vaso-
pressin. That's an anti-diuretic
hormone that regulates urine
production.
Proof we work a little harder: a Mutual Fund that
works a lot harder. The Parkstone Small
Capitalization Fund is the #1 ranked bank
managed mutual fund over the last 5 years,

stock funds based on annualized total
return for the five years ending 9/30/96.)*
No More Meat
If you've been toying with the
idea of following a vegetarian
diet, there's plenty of evidence
to support it. According to
Consumer Reports on Health
newsletter, British researchers
studied 5,000 vegetarians and
found that a meatless diet re-
duces blood-cholesterol levels,
lowers blood pressure and low-
ers homocysteine levels (reduc-
ing the risk of coronary disease).
Lacto-ovo vegetarians, who
do not consume meat but do eat
dairy products and eggs, can get
all the iron they need from their
diets. Vegans, who eat no meat,
dairy products or eggs, may find
they have to supplement their
diets with vitamins and miner-
als, such as vitamins B-12 and
D and calcium.
Still, with a few adjustments,
even meat-eaters can reap the
benefits of a vegetarian diet.
Some suggestions from the
editors of Consumer Reports:
Make plant foods the center
of your diet, using meat, fish and
poultry as a condiment. Con-
sider skipping meat entirely on
some days.
Try to consume five to nine
servings of produce per day and
six to 11 servings of grains and
beans.
Choose lean cuts of meat and
serve them in small portions.
