Vishay Came
Ofakim Plant

Jerusalem (JPFS) — Vishay In-
tertechnology's claim that gov-
ernment red tape caused it to
cancel a proposed $50 million fac-
tory in Ofakim is "simply un-
founded," acting Director-general
of the Trade and Industry Min-
istry Yehoshua Gleitman said.
The U.S.-based company said
--) it decided not to open its fifth Is-
raeli electronics plant in the
northern Negev town because of
six months of government foot-
dragging.
Mr. Gleitman said Vishay's
statement was based on the
company's disappointment at not
receiving a government invest-
ment-aid package for the Ofakim
project, despite the government's
previous refusal to grant Vishay
'-_-,- direct investment aid for the fac-
tory.
Vishay said plans to expand its
Dimona, Beersheba and Migdal
Ha'emek plants, which have re-
ceived promises of government
grants of 38 percent or 34 percent,
will go forward as scheduled. The
company recently said the gov-
ernment's proposal to reduce in-
vestment grants from 34 percent
D to 20 percent will not affect
Vishay.
Based in Pennsylvania, Vishay
develops and manufactures a
wide range of electronic resistors
and resistive sensors. The com-
pany sells its products to the com-
puter, telecommunications,
military/aerospace, and automo-
tive industries. Vishay Israel's
four plants ctu-rently employ more
than 3,000 workers.

TEVA Step Closer
To Copaxone OK

Jerusalem (JPFS) — TEVA Phar-
maceutical Industries said the
U.S. Food and Drug Administra-
tion has accepted its advisory pan-
el's recommendation to approve
the firm's multiple sclerosis drug,
, Copaxone.
The FDA's decision came in the
form of a so-called approvable let-
ter, which indicates that the FDA
has taken another step toward
giving final approval for Copax-
one,
Teva's first original drug.
Teva must now finish some
‘Th last-minute procedures, such as
labeling the product and com-
pleting the instructions for usage.
Dan Suesskind, Teva's chief fi-
nancial officer, said he expects Co-
paxone to be on the shelves early
next year.
He said Copaxone could in-
crease Teva's sales by "a few hun-
dred million dollars." Two weeks
ago, the advisory panel approved
Copaxone as a safe and effective
I'Lreatment for the relapsing-re-
mitting forms of MS, an incurable,
debilitating disease of the central
nervous system.
