Pressure Forces
' Belgian To Quit

Brussels (JTA) — Bowing to pres-
sure from some members of the
community, the chairman of the
umbrella organization of Belgian
Jewry has resigned.
David Susskind, 71, was re-
elected chairman of the Coordi-
IP nation Committee of. Belgian
Jewish Organizations in May.
But some of the affiliated or-
ganizations criticized Susskind
when he also became chairman
of the CCLJ, a left-oriented Jew-
ish lay organization that he
founded.
The CCLJ was very active in
the 1970s in fighting for the
rights of Soviet Jewry, and later
in advocating Israeli-Palestinian
reconciliation.
Those who asked for Mr.
Susskind's resignation said this
double chairmanship was "in-
compatible."
"This could have been a source
of confusion because as head of
the [coordination committee] you
are the fruit of a consensus, and
as head of the CCLJ you clearly
have a leftist image," a Jewish of-
ficial said in an interview.
While resigning from the co-
ordination committee, Mr.
Susskind decided to stay on as
chairman of the CCLJ.
Mr. Susskind was first elected
chairman of the coordination
committee in 1971, when the or-
ganization was created.
Earlier this year, when two
candidates for the top post failed
Pito get the required two-thirds ma-
jority of the board's vote,

We take pride in providing the
dignity, sanctity and simplicity of
Jewish Funeral services and complete
personal and professional care at a
reasonable cost. -
If you choose to follow the Jewish
tradition of a graveside or cemetery
chapel service, you don't have to pay
the extra costs associated with a large
funeral home.

Susskind agreed to be a candi-
date again and was re-elected,
getting 86 percent of the votes.
Elections. for a new chairman
will take place next month.

Jews Criticize
Czech Police

Prague (JTA) — Leaders of the
Czech Jewish community and of
the country's Romany population
have criticized police in the west-
em Bohemian town of Chodov for
their handling of a recent march
at which skinheads shouted
racist slogans.
Although the march was pub-
licized with fliers containing
racist slogans, it was sanctioned
by authorities as a demonstra-
tion against drugs, violence and
prostitution.
Police said the 250 demon-
strators who chanted "Police out!"
and "Gypsies out!" as well as anti-
Semitic slogans did not disrupt
public order.
"The demonstrators are illit-
erate and don't know what they
are saying," said Tomas Kraus,
executive director of the Federa-
tion of Jewish Communities in
the Czech Republic.
"What other explanation is
there when the citizens of a nation
that was oppressed by the Nazis
participate in such a march?"
"The actions of [the Chodov]
authorities cannot be tolerated,"
he added.
Ivan Vesely, secretary of the
Romany Democratic Congress,
condemned the march for having
"public displays of racism and
anti-Semitism."
He criticized local police, whose
only response to the event —
aside from briefly detaining a 15-
year-old boy for shouting "Jews
out!" — was to implore Romanies
beforehand not to the leave their
homes during the Nov. 2 march.
Mr. Vesely said the police's at-
titude was reminiscent of Nazi
Germany, which "tolerated vari-
ous violent groups."

Israeli Arab
Seized In Cairo

Jerusalem (JTA) — Israel has
asked Egypt to help locate an Is-
raeli Arab who was seized in
Cairo.
The London-based daily Al-
Hayat reported that 35-year-old
Azam Azam and several Egyp-
tians were arrested last week on
suspicion of spying for Israel.
Family members said Azam, a
mechanic at an Egyptian-Israeli
textile factory, was grabbed by
unidentified men outside his
Cairo hotel. They denied that he
was involved in anything except
his job. Mohammed Basiouny,
Egypt's ambassador to Israel,
pledged to get information about
Mr. Azam.
