though, by the other 58 percent.
Because that's what drove him.
That's what made us better.
But he also loved us. And
that's where I'm wandering
around right now. Professional-
ly, we know what we have to do.
We understand the mandate, be-
cause it's a part of our fabric.
As Andrew Buerger, Chuck's
son, said in his eulogy to his dad,
"Chuck's voice is always in our
heads: 'How can we be better?' "
The personal loss. In March of
1984, Chuck put something else
in my head. He almost fired me.
I think he had planned to. He
told me not to fake myself out,
ever, when it came to life or work.
I might have thought I was do-
ing a great job. It was, he said,
"merely good." Then he literally
said, "I love you."

They wanted to
have tea with
"Mr. Chuck."

This was a seminal moment in
my life, part of the Top Ten. I
keep that memory in a special
place and I instinctively revisit
it.
Since then, what I do, how I do
it, whether it is being a good ed-
itor, husband, father, person or
Jew, part of my ambition was
and remains to please Chuck.
Chuck and his wife Ronnie al-
ways put me at ease, but Chuck
also gave me the challenge to
move to Detroit.
The day before Chuck's bypass
surgery 11 years ago, he came to
me and hugged me, telling me
that he was worried about me.
He was referring to my father,
who was dying of cancer. Chuck
never talked about his own
surgery. He would close the of-
fices of the BJT to memorialize
my father's passing.
The time he came over to me
and said, "Arthur would sure love
to have you in Detroit."
The evening he came to my
Southfield home just because my
daughters wanted to have tea
with "Mr. Chuck."
The time he called me at home
on a Sunday, telling me to enjoy
myself more. He told me to stop
being such a heavy, and to be
comfortable with telling the
truth, and even failing in front of
my boss.
The freezing cold night his
management team huddled
around a barbecue grill, singing
"American Pie" and holding one
another tightly.
The Friday night in Tucson
when he told me he was proud of

me.
Snapshots.
My daughter has the camera
that Chuck gave her.
All of that time he had the big
picture. 0
