PRESCHOOL TEACHER page 7
"Part of the reason you don't
find men in early education set-
tings is because it's not something
men are comfortable with," said
Mr. Myers, a former preschool
teacher. "Society doesn't see it as
an appropriate job for males. If a
male works with young children,
there is a skepticism about why."
Mr. Myers said finances and
burnout probably have a lot to do
with a lack of men in early edu-
cation classrooms. Most positions,
he said, are minimum wage or
just above minimum, and typi-
cally one-third of the staff will turn
over in a year.
Cheryl Wertheimer, who occa-
sionally teaches with Mr. Pont,
said the children really adore him
and are especially happy when he
is in the classroom.
One boy invited Herbie home
to play. Another child told his
mother, 'There was a big boy play-
ing in our class today." One girl's
mom asked her what the best part
of Shabbat was. She said it was
when she got to sit next to Herbie
in shul.
"All the kids go home and talk
about Herbie," Mrs. Pont said.
"Just as we are not used to seeing
men in nursery school, neither are
the children. While a lot of it has
to do with the novelty, a lot has to
do with the appreciation he has
for young children."
