t the end of a narrow,

winding street in scenic
Old Jaffa, the sign outside
reads "Frank Meisler
Gallery."
Inside is a whole world of cre-
ativity. Gleaming sculpted works
of precious metals are on display
-- everything from a golden bull
to intricately crafted mezzuzot
and other Judaica in silver, gold
and other metals.
This gallery is headquarters
for Israel's most prominent sculp-
tor. It's the place where visitors
can see the most extensive selec-
tion of Mr. Meisler's widely ad-
mired work. What's more, they
see it at the very site where the
works are conceived and created.

is the model for a menorah that
will soon be installed in the Great
Synagogue in Lisbon, Portugal.
Recently, Prime Minister Ne-
tanyahu requested a miniature
of a wall sculpture of Jerusalem,
which Mr. Meisler had created
for a synagogue in Florida, which
the prime minister wanted for his
reception room.
Now Mr. Meisler is at work on
one of the most challenging and
significant projects he's ever tack-
led: creating a Torah shrine and
other Jewish symbols for a syn-
agogue to be erected in the cen-
ter of Moscow at a site which
honors Russia's sacrifices in
World War. II.

Because the sculptor works
right on the premises, there's
sometimes the chance for visitors
to meet the artist himself. Even
though it is a typically busy day,
he is generous with his time, of-
fering coffee and giving me a brief
tour of his headquarters before
we sit down to talk.
The gallery itself is only one
part of Mr. Meisler's headquar-
ters. Just around the corner in
a separate building is the foundry
where the metal is poured, cast
and shaped. "That's the begin-
ning of everything," explains Mr.
Meisler.
He leads the way into the
workroom where a number of
workers are busy cleaning, pol-
ishing, gold-plating and finishing
the metal.
Next we go upstairs to Mr.
Meisler's office — a cheerful room
with evidence of his drawings,
sketches and models.
On a nearby table is a meno-
rah with an unusual base which
is shaped like a ship's anchor. It

Jerusalem stone, will stand next
to a church and a mosque. It will
honor the Jewish soldiers — over
2 million — who perished during
the Holocaust.
As busy as Mr. Meisler has
been with this and other projects,
he has had time for another big
project — writing his first.book.
On the Vistula Facing East will
be released in England by pub-
lisher Andrew Deutsch. The book
is a memoir recounting his event-
ful early life.
Downstairs in the gallery, we
look at some of the new works.
Two of them, in gold and pewter,
are witty commentaries on mod-
ern life.
In one, Balancing Act, a man
sits in front of a computer at his
desk, with a phone in one hand,
fax machine by his side, trying to
balance the tools of his busy life.
In the other, Lady On the
Move, a woman holds a briefcase
in one hand, a satchel in the oth-
er, and her baby rests on her
shoulder. Her hair is flying; her
