G
enetic testing can be a dou-
ble-edged sword.
On the one hand, a
woman can find out if she
has a predisposition for breast
cancer and change her chances
of survival by altering her diet
and exercise patterns, perform-
ing monthly exams and regular
mammograms and be alert to
any changes which may signal
its onset.
On the other hand, informa-
tion regarding her test results
could leak, causing her to be the
target of discrimination.
This scenario, along with
many other ethical and legal
dilemmas facing today's society
surrounding the issue of genet-
ic testing, will be the focus of a
lecture sponsored by the De-
partment of Obstetrics and Gy-
necology to take place this
Sunday at Sinai Hospital.
"Our Bodies, Our Genes and
Our Children: Legal and Ethical
Issues in the New Genetics” will
be the topic of Dr. Mary Z. Pelias,
a professor with the Department
of Biometry and Genetics at
Louisiana State University Med-
ical Center and an expert on the
medical and legal issues involv-
ing genetics.

Dr. Pelias, who is on sabbati-
cal from her teaching position to
revise a genetics testing bill at
the federal level, said while the
breast cancer gene prevalent in
the Ashkenazi Jewish population
has grabbed headlines in the past
year, other ethical and legal is-
sues have pressed to the fore-
front.
"I will say that there are a
number of other issues involved
in genetics, questions about test-
ing children for a predisposition,
our property rights over tissue
samples," she said.
Currently 19 states have en-
acted some sort of genetic confi-
dentiality and non-discrimination
statutes; while a bill has been in-
troduced at the federal level,
there is no sweeping federal pro-
tection enacted as law. ❑
