are used to Adam's unusual hob-
by. That's why they weren't sur-
prised when Adam wanted to
bring home a stray cat from his
recent Project Discovery retreat,
held at Camp Tamarack.
Adam doesn't know how he got
so interested in animals. As a
child, whenever he went into a pet
shop, Adam became fascinated by,
his surroundings.

for less.

He worked in pet stores for
two years, and employee dis-
counts helped him accumulate
his own collection.
Before Adam gets a new ani-
mal, he is sure to do some re-
search. It's important, he said,
to know what to feed it and how
to care for it. His turtles are kept
in a tank where Adam can con-
trol their surroundings. His
chameleon lives in its own glass
cage and when Adam takes it
out, he often lets the animal
climb in a ceiling-high plastic
tree he also keeps in his room.
"When people ask how can I
let him keep all these animals,
I tell them it's his passion," said
Adam's mother, Ellen Bouchard.
"What would have happened if
Pavarotti's mom stopped him
from singing? Adam could be
into things that are a lot worse.
He's very responsible with his
animals and really has a knack
for caring for them."
Mrs. Bouchard does draw the
line with snakes. Although
Adam wants a snake, he re-
spects his mother's wishes to
keep them out of the house.
"A lot of my friends think I'm
crazy because I'm so into ani-
mals," Adam said. "But a lot of
them don't have hobbies yet, so
they don't really understand
mine." 111

n a large ballroom off the sanc-
tuary at Temple Israel, hun-
dreds of women gathered
recently to listen to a presen-

tation on a subject that not too
long ago would be considered

taboo.
Motivated in part by statistics,
in part by medical news that
more Ashkenazi Jewish women
carry a predisposing gene for 411
breast cancer than any other eth-
nic group to date, the women
were there to hear a nationally
known commentator, columnist
Linda Ellerbee, discuss her ex-
periences with breast cancer.
They were told that one in
eight women will develop breast
cancer, a statistic that has omi-
nously grown since the 1970s,
when it stood at one in 20.
