Standard dual airbags, a steel reinforced cabin, and front and rear crumple zones. It's
certainly what you'd expect from a luxury car. The new 1997 LS 400 goes one step
further: We've added front seat-mounted side-impact airbags. Other car companies
may meet expectations. But Lexus surpasses them. Test-drive the new LS 400 today.

and bulletin editors, and through
widespread distribution of our
written materials to thousands
of people.
Many rabbis signed the state-
ment, including representatives
of all movements in the Detroit
community. Many rabbis spoke
ofJewish Unity at Shabbat ser-
vices. Many leaders emphasized
it at meetings in the communi-
ty.
But this was only our second
Unity Shabbat. Let's hope The
Jewish News front-page story a
year from now will help focus our
community on the positive ef-
forts made to bind us together as
a people and as a community.
Encouragement of the Unity
Committee's efforts by The Jew-
ish News is important to elicit
more participation.

Unity Shabbat
A Success

Detroit's Jewish community
should be proud of its response to
a call for Jewish unity in cele-
bration ofJewish Unity Shabbat.
There were a multitude of
events and activities which took
place on that Shabbat, and hun-
dreds of people used materials
created by the Jewish Commu-
nity Council's Unity Committee
to enhance their Shabbat obser-
vance. The dedicated members
of this committee, who represent
all streams of Jewish belief and
practice, worked diligently to
make this annual project a suc-
cess.
Special programs for Unity
Shabbat were conducted by the
Hechtman and Teitel Federation
Apartments, Temple Emanu-El,
the Birmingham Temple, Jew-
ish Parents Institute, Sholem
Aleichem Institute and Work-
men's Circle.
Rabbi Herschel Finman's ra-
dio listeners heard a special pro-
gram segment on Unity Shabbat.
Dozens of rabbis from all of the
religious movements preached
about Jewish unity over the past
several months leading up to Uni-
ty Shabbat. In fact, the Detroit
Jewish community is nationally
known for being on the cutting
edge of this issue, with Jewish
leaders around the country solic-
iting our advice and using our
materials.
We applaud all who partici-
pated in these unifying activities
and those who daily strive to
build bridges among Jews. Let
us all join in promoting and en-
couraging these and other efforts
for intra-communal respect.
