A typical Oak Park intersection.
park decks are a direct result of
the lobbying efforts of a former
mayor, Charlotte Rothstein, who
kept the pressure on Washing-
ton to tie the city together for
those who walk on the Sabbath.
"Success has many fathers,"
but one that was certainly over-
looked in your article is the cur-
rent mayor, Jerry Naftaly. The
mayor and his talented council
and fine administrative team
have been an integral part of any
success that the city is experi-
encing. They have encouraged
business to locate and support
the many activities that make a
city a hometown desirable to all.
They have demanded that city
hall provide quality services to
the residents.
I encourage you to do a follow-
up story on the demographics,
population projections and, most
important, the fine leadership of
the mayor and his council.

Mr. Derfner, in his article "From
the Left," and Mr. Baker, in
"From the Right," (Oct. 25) ar-
ticulate well their positions in
the political spectrum; but each
leaves unanswered the question
of how to build bridges between
their respective positions. For
this to happen, each needs to ad-
dress the others' concerns.
For this to begin to happen,
Mr. Derfner needs to respond to
questions about the Rabin-Peres
peace formula. For example, how
much land should be given up to
activate peace? And what hap-
pens if, despite Israel's best ef-
forts, the "land for peace"
formula fails to achieve peace
with the Arabs?
Likewise, Mr. Baker needs
also to address some questions:
What kind of society is Israel be-
coming by treating Arabs as sec-
ond-class citizens? And how
many Jewish and Arab lives
need to be sacrificed to sustain
an unwelcome Jewish presence
in Hebron?
There is a need for those who
speak from different parts of the
political spectrum to talk to and
respect each other's concerns.
This is necessary if Israel is to
survive in a difficult part of the
world as a viable democracy.

Unity Shabbat
Seeks Support
As one of the members of the
Jewish Community Council's
Unity Committee, I want to
thank The Jewish News for help-
ing us to publicize Jewish Unity
Shabbat Oct. 25-26, and for your
excellent editorial in the Oct. 25
edition.
You offered many suggestions,
urging Jews to learn about each
other, to avoid "putting each oth-
er down," and to reach out all year
long to those whose religious prac-
tices differ from their own.
In fact, our Unity Committee
has the same ideas. We have dis-
tributed Jewish Unity materials
for Passover and at the Jewish
Community Council annual
meeting, and we have encour-
aged the AJE to include Jewish
Unity in its educational efforts.
We have really appreciated the
support of The Jewish News in
publicizing our efforts.
Therefore, I was discouraged
by the front-page article written
by Jill Davidson Sklar in the Oct.
25 issue. While she passed along
some useful information, it was
ironic that her article focused on
which rabbis did not join in our
Unity statement and on people
at the Jewish Community Cen-
ter who did not know about Uni-
ty Shabbat.
Those same people might not
be able to identify Rashi, the
Aleynu prayer, CJF or Herzl.
Our committee worked hard
to get the message out, through
letters to clergy, organizational
presidents, executive directors
