People are hedging their bets
on the future. "Anybody who's try-
ing to sell an apartment now is in
trouble," said Asher Bin-Nun, a
Tel Aviv-area real estate agent.
"Buyers are completely non-com-
mittal. They'll take a look at an
apartment, but they won't close
a deal. They say they don't know
what's going to happen."
That's particularly true at Kib-
butz Merom Golan, about a mile
from the Syrian border. Despite
'C) recent Syrian troop movements
in nearby Lebanon, kibbutz sec-
retary Doron Bogdanovsky isn't
afraid of immiment war. "I'm
more worried as a citizen of Israel
than as a resident of the Golan —
I think we're going to be seeing
sporadic terror attacks by Pales-
tinians," said Mr. Bogdanovsky,
who described himself as "a sabra
with a Holocaust complex."
In volatile political conditions,
however, the national mood is
also volatile. At the beginning of
last week, the Dan bus company
saw an upturn in ridership.
"Maybe it's because Israel and the
Palestinians are talking again
and people are more optimistic,
or maybe it's because people have
just grown accustomed to living
with tension and are now getting
back to their routine. I really don't
know," said Mr. Kagan.
Mr. Bin-Nun says all he want-
ed to be able to do was walk
around with his son without be-
ing afraid that a bus was going to
explode in front of him. Now, he
says, he stays clear of Dizengoff
Center.
He is wistful for the "old days"
— when war was far from Is-
raelis' minds. "People had gotten
used to quiet, to traveling, to en-
joying themselves," he says.
"They talked about business,
what they were buying, what
they were doing. Now they talk
about what Mubarak said, where
[President Ezer] Weizman's go-
ing, about the closure of the ter-
ritories, about the opening of the
territories. People are worried.
They don't know which way the
wind is blowing." ❑

While secular and religious resi-
dents of the Upper Galilee share
air raid shelters when Katyusha
rockets are falling, under normal
circumstances, they seldom share
time together.
Now, however, things are be-
ginning to change, thanks to a
growing dialogue between the two
groups in the area. This welcome
development was evident last
week, when religious and secular
