Howev- er, the fact that Israeli homo- sexuals and lesbians now havec, their own TV program is signif- icant in itself. Despite the growing power of the Orthodox, gays are seldom discriminated against, and when they are, the courts will usually rule in their favor. It is true that single-sex marriages aren't sanc- tioned in this country, but then neither are heterosexual mar- c--„__) riages performed by Conserva- tive or Reform rabbis. What remains to be seen is whether the union of a gay couple wed abroad will be recognized here (as are other marriages that take place overseas). However, quite apart from the legal standing of gays, they are bound to be outsiders in a soci- ety which still, for the most part, believes in the nuclear family and in having children. And should a young man show up at a seder with his male bedmate or a young woman with her live- in girlfriend, they would not be welcomed by most families. Homosexuals are hoping that the attitude of the general pub- lic will change as a result of their new TV show. Moreover, they believe that it will encourage fearful "closet gays" and perhaps persuade them to reveal their true sexu- al orientation. There are also plans to present a discussion on homosexuality within the framework of a mag- azine program for young people produced by Educational Tele- vision. It was to have been screened this month but has meanwhile been postponed for "technical reasons." Press reports have it that Israel's (Orthodox) Education Minister, Mr. Zevu- lun Hammer, was responsible for the holdup, but his spokesman has issued a denial. 109, 626-6668 West loo#011 • fa I AWARDED CERTIFICATE BY GIA IN GRADING & EVALUATION 30400 Telegraph Rd. • Suite 134 Bingham Farms 642-5575 Rehovot, Israel. rp CO rD EST. 1919 Lawrence M.
