ple "who don't know anything
about Judaism are now equating
Judaism itself with Yigal Amir."
Rabbi Katz pointed to the post-
assassination investigation of
Bar-Ilan University carried out
by an outside committee headed
by former Attorney General Yosef
Harish. "It said that Yigal Amir
killed Rabin not because he stud-
ied here, but despite the fact that
he studied here," Rabbi Katz said.
Most emphatically, the assas-
sination has not given Rabbi Katz
or the students any cause to doubt
their own approaches to Judaism,
or about the content of Judaism.
"It didn't affect my beliefs," said
Peretz Schweiger. "Some people,
unfortunately, look at Judaism in
a fanatical way. My beliefs are, I
would say, liberal. I obey all 613
mitzvot, but I think I use my
mind, which Yigal Amir didn't
do."

Like other students, Mr.
Schweiger said it was important
not only to read the holy texts, but
also to consult with rabbis and
with "people more learned and in-
telligent than ourselves" to un-
derstand them. He allowed that
"maybe one percent" of rabbis
would agree that killing a Jew, or
a gentile for that matter, was per-
missible.
Rabbi Katz stressed that the
great majority of commentaries
were prefaced by the author's ad-
monition that his words were
written for the sake of argument,
and should not be taken as a pre-
scription for action.
Finally, the view from the kol-
lel is that Yigal Amir's act re-
flected on him and on his own
twisted interpretation of Judaism,
and on nothing beyond that.
"Everybody feels the enormity
of a Jew having murdered the
prime minister, and the closer
you were to the assassination, the
more you feel it," said Mr. Yishai.
"But Yigal Amir wasn't like oth-
er people here. As for myself, I felt
before the assassination that my
approach to Judaism was the
right one, and that's the way I've
felt since the assassination."
Rabbi Katz said Yigal Amir has
not changed his view of Judaism
"in any shape or form. It's like
asking a doctor if he thinks his
medicine is bad just because one
of his patients took the wrong
dosage and got sick. The medicine
is excellent; this one patient took
it the wrong way." E
