Three years ago, Rabbi Katz was teaching Mr. Amir and oth- ers the Talmudic passages on din rodef — where it says that if a rodef, or assailant, is on the verge of murdering someone, a by- stander is permitted to kill the rodef. That's because there is no time to turn to the authorities to protect the innocent. One year after Yitzhak Rabin's assassination and with his mur- derer sitting in jail, Orthodox Jews who studied with Mr. Amir have some interesting things to say about him. "Yigal Amir didn't speak up in class; he didn't incite; he just sat quietly and studied seriously," Rabbi Katz recalled. After the assassination, Mr. Amir claimed that Rabin was a rodef and that he had executed him according to Jewish law. "In my worst nightmare I never Ri $ 37month LEASE FOR 36 MONTHS CHOOSE FROM A RAINBOW OF COLORS: • Black • White • Medium Dark Green Metallic • Dark Beige Metallic • Medium Red Metallic Oldsmobile `36 month lease, $1900 cap cost reduction. "Nobody ever talks about him. He has no influence on us today, just like he had no influence on us when he was here," said a student who gave his name only as Yishai. "He was a lone wolf" The mark is there, but its out- lines are vague. Asked how the murder had affected the way he teaches Jewish texts, Rabbi Katz said he couldn't give any exam- ples, but added, "I'm sure it has, even if in a subconscious way. We've come to appreciate that it's not only what you say, but how you say it." Rabbi Katz noted that he has not taught din rodef in the last year, but that if he did, he's sure the memory of Mr. Amir's pres- ence in those lessons three years ago would affect his presentation. "But that doesn't mean I look at every student and ask myself, 'Hmm, could this one turn out to be another Yigal Amir?"' he added. The knowledge that Yigal Amir sat in the classes and studyhalls of the kollel and that he drew his inspiration from Jewish religious texts has left a mark on the insti- tution and its roughly 400 stu- dents. "We carry it with us. It hovers over us," said Rabbi Katz. On closer inspection, this re- mark seemed an overstatement. Neither Rabbi Katz nor any of the students interviewed said they ever sat in class and thought, "Yi- Kollel student Arye Frei put it this way: "Until the assassina- tion we thought there was no connection between what we learn and what we do in real life. Now that's changed. We some- times get the feeling that maybe it's not black or white, maybe there's a middle way." He couldn't give any examples of this, though. Mr. Frei saw one clear conse- quence of the assassination: Stu- dents at the kollel, along with religious Jews throughout the country, feel that secular Israel blames them for the crime. "We feel harassed," Mr. Frei said. "People think that we kill
