In the late 1960s, Dvora Teit- elbaum, then a doctoral student at the Weizmann Institute, was conducting research on the effects of synthetic proteins, or polymers, on animals. Under the auspices of immunologists Michael Sela and Ruth Amon, the team began developing a treatment using polymers to suppress MS attacks in animals. After more than 15 years of re- search, COP-1, the scientific name for Copaxone, successfully com- pleted preliminary clinical trials at the Albert Einstein Medical Center in 1986, and with growing faith in COP-1's potential, the Weizmann In- stitute began look- ing for a company that could take its treatment to the marketplace. At about the same time, Teva's CEO Eli Hurvitz was beginning to look into local re- search projects in order to begin producing innovative drugs, a bold move for a company whose sales were less than $100 million. The Teva-Weizmann relation- ship is one of the few examples of such collaboration between Israeli academia and Israeli industrial •initiatives. Not only would the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's peripher- al and central nervous system ad- visory panel determine the fate of Teva's multiple sclerosis drug, Co- paxone; the result of the meeting would determine whether this corporate star in the relatively mi- nor-league world of Israeli indus- try would be promoted to the international major league. After five hours of deliberation, Teva made the cut. And as a re- sult, it looks as though Teva will become the first Israeli pharma- ceutical company to earn the FDA's ap- proval for an innovative drug, pro- pelling the company into the exclusive and highly competitive ranks of drug manufactun ers whose novel treat- ments gain access to the United States marketplace. . The com- - pany has received what is known as an approvable letter from the FDA, but final approval on the drug's labeling and dosage direc- tions has yet to be granted. Analysts estimate the inter- national market for MS drugs has the potential to reach between $1- $4 billion and say that Copaxone 0 should generate between $200- $300 million worth of sales for the $1 billion company.
