Mr. Dworkin, a Detroit Coun-
try Day School grad whose great-
grandfather, Louis Goodman,
settled in Detroit in 1889, is not
formally educated in business
management. He aspired to be
a journalist and throughout col-
lege worked for the Ann Arbor
News. He also spent a few sum-
`Thers interning for Ackerman
and Ackerman, a Detroit law
firm that handled the land con-
demnation cases that resulted
from General Motors' Poletown
plant.
After graduating, Mr.
Dworkin accepted an invitation
from a Muslim cleric he'd met at
the University of Michigan to
visit Afghanistan. Unable to ob-
tain a visa, he flew to India, cov-
xed the Sikh uprising following
the assassination of Indira
Gandhi, and from there crossed
the Safed Koh mountain range
to get into Afghanistan. He pho-
tographed and wrote about the
experience for the Detroit News.
Returning to the States, Mr.
Dworkin landed in Washington,
where his work at an interna-
tional trade newsletter got him
--Linvolved in legislation related to
the textile industry. Congress-
man Chandler, a Republican,
asked him to join his staff as
trade and national security ad-
viser, which occupied Mr.
Dworkin for the next 3 1/2 years.
The experience put him in
contact with the Republican
<-‘ ,leadership in the House, which
was occupied with aiding the
Nicaraguan contras. Mr.
Dworkin ended up following Rep.
Bernie Aronson, a conservative
Democrat, to the State Depart-
ment, where he served as acting
deputy assistant secretary for
legislative affairs and senior leg-
islative adviser for Latin Amer-
ican policy. He later joined Mr.
Fitzwater and Ms. Tutwiler as
an associate in their political
- communications consulting firm.
In 1994, he joined Fannie
Mae, where he served as direc-
tor of policy communications.
"It's easy to look back on the
last 10 or 15 years and say,
Wow, that's a lot of different
things,' but my attitude has al-
ways been, in terms of my ca-
reer, that I seem to have been
most successful when I'm open
to opportunity. Because I always
have an open mind, radical
changes have been more possi-
ble.
"Here in Detroit I find that one
of the most important elements
of my job is not the last two years
I spent at Fannie Mae. In fact,
it's my extended experience since
1986 in coalition-building and
bringing together people who
don't report directly to me and
in some cases, don't work for the
same organization as me."
