1966 was the tirst and probably
only, senior class to -lose the Spir-
it Jug was a big topic of conversa-
tion that Saturday night.
And on the Sunday morning
following the reunion, there was
a breakfast in the cafeteria at
Oak Park High School, which by
the way, looks to be in great
shape.
We took a tour around the
school, remembering those ugly
red gymsuits we had to wear, the
10-cent apple machine, going to
Nelson's for hamburgers (pre-
McDonald's) and-hanging out at
Northland: .We'-iedalled all the
skating we did at the Oak Park
ice arena, going to dances at the
community center, walking to
school through the park.
During the 1960s, Oak Park
High was a matchmaker's
dream. With a Jewish popula-
tion hovering at 90 percent,
many inter- and intra-class mar-
riages were bound to occur. Most
people worry about their spous-
es being bored at a reunion, but
my husband Lonny (OPHS
Class of 1965) had the opportu-
nity to check in with quite a few
of his own classmates at mine.
In the final analysis, that old,
familiar excuse, "I'm not going
to my reunion because I still see
the people I care about," just
doesn't cut it. My one regret
about the reunion was that
many of the classmates I'd been
friendly with in high school
didn't show up.
The reality is, as we get older,
we just don't have time to keep
up with all the people who pass
through our lives. But it's still a
pleasure to see them again. Even
if it's only once a decade.
During our reunion weekend,
no one gratuitously suggested
getting together, and there were
few "I'll call you" promises to be
heard. But we all knew that, in
some special way, we are and al-
ways will be connected. ❑
