ington Hills won the soup
cooking contest at the
Neighborhood Project's
fifth Kosher Food Fair at the Jim-
my Prentis Morris Jewish Com-
munity Center. Ms. Globerman
took first prize for her cabbage
borscht.
Second-prize winner was Hag-
it Mikanovsky of Oak Park, for
her corn soup recipe. Doris Blech-
man of Bloomfield Hills placed
third for her pareve pea soup.
Restaurateur Matt Prentice
and chef and cooking instructor
Annabel Cohen gave demon-
strations. Channel 7 reporter
Mike Huckman read the chil-
dren's story "Stone Soup."
Contest judges were Ms. Co-
hen, Paul Wertz of Excellence
Too Catering and The Jewish
News columnist Danny Raskin.
Following are the winning
recipes:

SORIL GLOBERMAN'S
CABBAGE BORSCHT
1 small head of cabbage
2 qts. of tomatoes, skinned
1 can beef broth
2 teaspoons beef granules
1 can tomato sauce
1 onion minced
garlic powder, pepper and salt to
taste
3 bay leaves
small amount of sour salt plus
1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
2 tablespoons apricot preserves
2 tablespoons raisins
2 tablespoons brown sugar
add additional white sugar to
taste
6 oz. fresh mushrooms sliced
Core and shred the cabbage. Add
all ingredients and cook until cab-
bage is done, about 1 1/2 hours.
HAGIT MIKANOVSKY'S
CORN SOUP
5 cups water
5 teaspoons pareve chicken soup
powder
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon black pepper
2 cups frozen sweet corn
1 egg
Boil the water. Add the pareve
chicken soup powder. Add the
corn, sugar and pepper. Bring the
soup to a boil. Scramble the egg.
Drop the egg in the soup while
stirring quickly. Cook 5 more
minutes.
DORIS BLECHMAN'S
PAREVE PEA SOUP
1 cup dried split peas, rinsed
4 cups water
3 carrots, peeled and sliced
1 medium onion, peeled and
chopped
1 stalk celery, sliced
1 medium potato, peeled and
diced
salt, pepper, garlic powder to
taste
Pinch of sugar, optional
1/2 teaspoon pareve margarine,
optional
Combine peas and water in 3- or
4-quart pot. Bring to a boil. Add
vegetables and seasonings. Bring
to a boil again, turn to low, cover
and simmer for 1 hour, stirring oc-
casionally. Mash to desired con-
sistency, taste for seasoning and
add margarine. Continue sim-
mering for about 20 minutes
longer. If too thick, thin with wa-
ter. Recipe may be doubled or
tripled. Freezes well. Serves 4-5.
