Gold's makes a comeback with its Parfait
Horseradish Sauce and two cocktail sauces.
JILL DAVIDSON SKLAR STAFF WRITER
L
ike most people, I believe in
giving second chances.
So when the people from
Gold's horseradish sauce
sent a box of their products short-
ly after we gave a forks down rat-
ing to their salsa, we had to try
it.
Gold's is a New York-based
maker of such products as horse-
radish sauce, horseradish sauce
with beets, extra hot horseradish
sauce, cocktail sauce, extra hot
cocktail sauce and catsup with
horseradish sauce. The company
has been family owned for three
generations and is looking to get
into hotter items.
Their products, a staple found
behind the doors in many a Jew-
ish or non-Jewish refrigerator,
can be purchased at Farmer Jack
stores and One Stop Kosher.
Many use the sauces to add a lit-
tle zest to white fish, chicken or
beef.
All are pareve and certified
kosher under the supervision of
the Union of Orthodox Jewish
Congregations of America, or OU.
Most Kroger and Farmer Jack
stores carry at least one item in
the Gold line.
We taste-tested the Parfait
Horseradish Sauce and two cock-
tail sauces, Gold's Original
Gourmet Cocktail Sauce Extra
Spicy and the plainer version,
Gold's Cocktail Sauce. Per one
teaspoon serving, each sauce has
zero fat, 60 milligrams of sodium,
2 grams of carbohydrates, 5 calo-
ries and no protein.
Being dedicated to serving the
kosher-keeping community with
our assessment of products on the
market, we put the lack of nutri-
tion aside, grabbed our cocktail
weenies and our bagel chips and
set out to find the truth about
these sauces.

My palate is no stranger to
spice. At sushi bars, I have been
known to dilute my soy sauce
with large doses of wasabi,
Japanese horseradish that can
burn skin on contact.
So when I cracked open the
Parfait sauce and the strong
smell of horseradish wafted to my
nostrils, I couldn't wait to savor
the flavor.
I wasn't disappointed. The
sauce was very hot with a strong
horseradish taste. Only a
smidgen caused my eyes to wa-
ter and my sinuses to clear.
The two horseradish sauces
were remarkably similar, despite
their plain and extra spicy des-
ignations. The original sauce had
a greater tomato flavor, while the
extra spicy was a little heavier on
the horseradish. Both were good,
but I wanted a little more on the
taste end.
With all three products in the
forks up category, it makes one
wonder why Gold's doesn't throw
in its sombreros and give up on
the salsa.
The Jewish News staff also
gave the products a forks up rat-
ing.
Parfait Horseradish:
"Hot, hot, hot."
— Susie Sherman
"This is by far the best horse-
radish sauce I have ever had.
Creamy and smooth and very,
very hot."
— Heather Bondy
Gold's Original Cocktail
Sauce:
"Not a lot of horseradish. Good
for the weak of heart."
— Jill Davidson Sklar
"The Gold's cocktail sauce is
good on the bagel chip, but it
would be much better on kosher
'crab."
— Jennifer Finer
"Very good, but why would a
kosher-keeping person need a
shrimp sauce?"
— Julie Edgar
Gold's Original Cocktail
Sauce Extra Spicy:
"Don't be fooled by the extra
spicy label. It has got a kick but
nothing too strong."
— Jennifer Finer
"Extra Spicy is excellent. Nice
flavor. The original didn't do any-
thing for me."
— Susie Sherman 0
