• Distant Recognition Letters from Farmington Hills win status for a Polish cemetery. ALAN HITSKY ASSOCIATE EDITOR he 50-year effort by a Farmington Hills man to win recognition for a Jew- ish cemetery in Poland reaped rewards this summer. The former cemetery in Slup- sk, Poland, which until 1945 was Stolp, Germany, was given a second commemorative mon- ument this summer by the Polish government. In 1994, Polish municipal officials also erected a monu- ment on the site at the urg- ing of the Farmington Hills man, Frank Theyleg; the German consul in Detroit; and a Polish historian. The Theyleg family, known as Seelig at the time, fled their home for Shanghai, China, as World War II loomed. Mr. Theyleg start- ed writing Polish authorities after the war about the ceme- tery, which contained the graves of his grandparents and great-grandparents. He learned in the 1960s that a family had preserved the ceme- tery through the war, and the West German government hon- ored them in 1967. But the cemetery and its chapel had been turned into a storage yard after 1945. The ad- jacent Christian cemeteries were leveled. The site now has two monu- ments in memory of the Jewish people buried there and a plaque on the chapel wall. The munici- pality has employed a caretaker, is renovating the chapel and is creating a commemorative park on the site. O fl Right: Historian Stanislaw Szpilewski lays flowers at the monument. Southfield Eccentric 10/24/96 More than 5,000 children are scalded by hot water in the tub each year, according to the National Safe Kids Campaign, prompting manu- facturers to respond with several engineering breakthroughs. One innovation from Delta is the patented scald-guard pressure-bal- ance valve that keeps water temperature within a safe ±1-3°F of initial setting. This prevents temperature shocks from sudden pressure changes in cold or hot water, whether a toilet is flushed or dishwasher turned on, your shower is never interrupted. A safety stop set at 100 degrees prevents children from accidentally scalding themselves. Almost all 50 states now require that these types of safety valves be used in all new construction.
