One year after the Million Man
March in Washington produced
a near-nervous breakdown
among Jewish leaders, three
facts are evident.
First, Louis Farrakhan's bid
to elevate himself to the top
ranks of the African-American
leadership has failed miserably,
and only partially because of his
comic-opera diplomacy with
African and Middle Eastern dic-
tators. Mr. Farrakhan has dis-
played an awesome ability to
destroy his own credibility by
failing to recognize the hurtful-
ness of his words or the un-
palatability of his ideology.
Mr. Farrakhan, we now see,
is exactly what he seems — a
classic American hater who is
limited in his political range by
a personality that gravitates to
bizarre extremes.
Secondly, the country has not
paid the slightest attention to the
social and economic forces that
have led a significant number of
people to lend support to Mr.
Farrakhan, even backhandedly.
Far from it; a year of congres-
sional action has only added new
flammable material to the tin-
derboxes of our inner cities.
Finally, the Jewish communi-
ty is no closer to any consensus
on how best to deal with Mr. Far-
rakhan or with the social and
economic forces that have led to
his rise, however unmeteoric.
Last year, when it began to
look like the Million Man March
in Washington might be a pub-
lic relations success, Jewish lead-
ers worried that the massive
demonstration was part of a
master plan by the Nation of Is-
lam leader to mainstream him-
self.
There were concerns that he
would exploit the legitimate frus-
trations of a disenfranchised in-
ner-city community, and that he
would use support for his ad-
mirable notions about personal
and family responsibility to
spread his ideology of hate to a
much broader audience.
But those goals were never
met, if indeed they ever were his
aims.
Even on the day of the march,
Mr. Farrakhan couldn't bring
himself to sound like a legitimate
social critic; his rambling, some-
times incomprehensible speech
included powerful rhetoric, but
also some of the darkest ele-
ments of his conspiracy-filled ide-
ology.
As if to confirm the point, Mr.
Farrakhan embarked on a world
tour earlier this year that
