JEWISH MAKE A SPLASH! p\rq l i f -Isit 7t2,e ifi:$7.,e.71 1!, ,,,q,; FAMILY SERVICE presents PARENTING YOUR ADD/ADHD CHILD PAMELA REDMOND SATRAN SPECIAL TO THE APPLETREE Swimming brings special fun — and special hazards. Especially dangerous for small children is water, from backyard pools to lakes to the ocean to the hot tub on the deck. Here, from the YMCAs wa- ter safety program, and the American Red Cross' rules for children's aquatic safety, are ways parents can help keep chil- dren safe. Don't rely on inflatable toys as lifesavers. Toys and rafts may be fun, but they can't be count- ed on as lifesaving devices. Teach small children a water safety routine. Children should learn to wait on the side while parents enter and exit the wa- ter, and not to get into the pool or lake themselves until Mom or Dad gives the signal. Keep the pool clean. In a pool, infants and toddlers should wear plastic pants that fit tightly. Children who are less than clean should shower be- fore swimming. In a lake, be en- vironmentally correct — don't shampoo and swim in the same water. Prepare for emergencies. Near a pool or lake or in a boat, have emergency devices at hand. A long pole, a ring buoy with a line, emergency phone numbers and first-aid kit should be at waterside. ❑ Pamela Redmond Satran is a contributing editor of Parent- ing magazine.
