nal trimester when many women
suffer insomnia.
Leslie Paterra, a makeup artist
at Lori Karbal Et Al, recommends
the Trish McEvoy Protective
Shield, which she says "is the best
concealer on the market and, if
applied properly, will last all day."
These last few months of preg-
nancy, when many women gain
most of their weight, also may be
a good time to look into a pressed
powder or bronzer that Ms. Pa-
terra says politely, "will give your
face more contouring" (that is,
help disguise the fat from all those
Hershey bars). To use, she said,
"find your cheekbone and then
work the hollow, applying right
under the bone."
In the first trimester, it's like-
ly not insomnia or weight but nau-
sea that's plaguing you, turning
your skin a lovely shade of green.
Ms. Paterra also likes the Trish
McEvoy and Lorac lines for base,
though as a general rule she ad-
vises women to buy a shade that
most closely matches their skin
tone.
Dennis Lajiness, a make-up
artist with Clinique Cosmetics at
Neiman-Marcus at the Somerset
Collection, says a variety of prod-
ucts exist to accommodate a cer-
tain problem that seems to
invariably plague pregnant
women: extra-oily skin.
"There are a lot of oil-free hy-
drators — Clinique makes a great
one called Moisture Surge — and
oil-free gels," he said. "Just re-
member to make certain that
what you're buying, whether it's
a base or a blush, is really oil free,
then don't forget to moisturize be- L,
cause even oily skin needs to be
hydrated."
Mr. Lajiness has a low-main-
tenance program for the pregnant
woman who finds the idea of an
hour-long beauty routine about
as appealing as raw chicken. The
three key words: concealer, blush-
er, lipstick. This combination is
"the quickest way to warm up any
face," he said. '-
Earth tones will look good on
just about everyone regardless of
skin color, he said, and you can't
go wrong with a matching pink or
coral blusher and lipstick.
To remove it all, Mr. Lajiness
suggests a non-deodorant soap, a
clarifier and a hydrator. Even
among women with raging hor-
mones, "great skin can be creat-
ed," he said. "It's a balance
between proper cleansing, exfoli-
ating and moisturizing."
He points out that one of the
best features of cosmetics, unlike
a hair permanent, for example, is
that they're temporary.
"Pregnancy is a great time to
experiment with make-up," he
said. "It's not like a bad hairstyle
that you'll have to live with for (
months. With make-up, you can
get an immediate change — but
if you don't like it all you have to
do is go home and wash your
face." D
