place to socialize within the next
several years.
"I think things here are really
going to snowball," Mr. Modell
said. "The more people invest in
Detroit, the more people are go-
ing to want to get in on the ac-
tion."
He will begin making serious
efforts to get younger people in-
volved within the next six
months to a year. First, he wants
to continue concentrating his ef-
forts on the work being done by
the Friends of Woodward. Al-
though a young adult offshoot
group is several months away,
Mr. Modell makes every effort to
recruit anyone who crosses his
path.

Creating Future Memories

"When [the Friends of Wood-
ward] gets stronger, I'd like to
eventually form a branch specif-
ically for people around my age.
People want to get involved, but
they don't know what to do. Of-
ten, they need a little push to get
there."
Proud of his Judaism, Mr.
Modell is particularly interested
in seeing young Jews share his
goals for the city. Jews, he said,
by nature of their upbringing, are
oriented toward helping. Besides,
many young adults have parents
and grandparents whose
liveswere shaped growing up in
Detroit.
Mr. Modell said his civic ac-
tivities stem from a desire tb give
a piece of himself to an effort he
believes in. However, it also
helped that his uncle, Steven
Reifman, a Farmington Hills at-
torney, was already actively in-
volved in urban revitalization.
Mr. Reifman was one of the
founders and created the idea be-
hind the Friends of Woodward.
He also opened the Woodward
Bagel Bakery Coffeehouse in the
center of Woodward Village. Mr.
Modell is a part-owner of the
restaurant.
"J.J. was interested in what
we were doing, but, at the time,
he was studying at Brown Uni-
versity," Mr. Reif-man said. "He
wrote a paper on Detroit [for an
urban studies class] that tapped
into what we were doing. It put
a studied approach to revitaliz-
ing a core area and it was help-
ful.
"J.J. is a very focused and goal-
oriented person," Mr. Reifman
continued. "I think he saw what
I was doing and took an interest
in it. He was looking to do some-
thing important, and when he
wants to do something, he keeps
working toward it." ❑

on "Jewish Views on Intimacy,"
featuring author Rabbi Debra
Oreastein, 4:30 p,m. at Barnes
and Noble in West Bloomfield.
