The 211 Medicaid beds at
Menorah House and the mere 30
at the new privately owned and
operated Danto facility are not
set aside for Jewish residents.
They are assigned to whoever
happens to be at the right place
when a bed becomes available.
Our visits to the Menorah
House (also privately owned) do
not reflect a Jewish atmosphere
but rather show a cross-section
of the population of the area in
which it is located.
What is to happen now? Will
Federation and the Jewish
community allow our indigent
elderly to be warehoused in sub-
standard nursing homes far
from the mainstream of Jewish
life?
Yes, Mr. Hitsky, we agree
with you 100 percent; charity
must begin at home!

"Denying a
Plague That
Affects Us
All" (Oct. 18,
1996), which
emphasized
the impor-
tance for the
Jewish community to respond to
the AIDS epidemic. As Jews, we
are not immune to the virus.
Many local families have been
affected by HIV/AIDS. Some
have kept it a secret for fear of
rejection and/or discrimination.
Others who have been more
open have often been subject to
verbal insensitivity.
We must all remember that
bikur cholim, visiting the sick,
and chesed v'emet, compassion
and truth, are Jewish
values that include
all people.
Although there is
room for more reli-
gious institutions "to
get more involved in
the fight," the Michi-
gan Jewish AIDS
Coalition (MJAC)
has been very fortu-
nate to have strong
support from the
clergy.
Synagogues and
temples include our
curriculum in their
educational agenda
annually. Rabbis
Arnie Sleutelberg
and Josh Bennett
serve on the MJAC
board of directors. Rabbi Bunny
Freedman, a member of the ad-
visory committee, has been a
tremendous resource to MJAC.
"And Behold ... the Light Was
Good," the World AIDS Day pro-
gram, is being chaired by Rabbi
Bennett, Rabbi Nevins and Rab-
bi Sleutelberg. Several other rab-
bis and cantors will also
participate in this healing ser-
vice on Dec. 1. We invite our
community to demonstrate its
responsibility by coming at 2
p.m. to the Maple-Drake Jewish
Community Center.

Ethical Problem
In Tunnel Closure
The recent refusal by Prime Min-
ister Binyamin Netanyahu to close
the Temple Mount Tunnel is out-
rageous. In the Declaration of Is-
rael's Independence it says, "The
State of Israel .. will safeguard the
sanctity and inviability of the
shrines and Holy Places of all re-
ligions." Regardless of our personal
opinions, but based on those of the
people who feel their shrines are
not being safeguarded, the tunnel
must be closed.
Prime Minister Netanyahu's
anti-Arab handling of this situ-
ation is leaving people regretting
his election. Netanyahu is more
concerned about the tunnel's
possible stimulation of econom-
ic growth than he is about the
rights of his Muslim citizens. He
has embarrassed the State of Is-
rael and the world's Jewish pop-
ulation with his stubbornness.
In the full spotlight, he has
presented an Israel that we nev-
er want to see: one that is wrong.
Netanyahu and his government
have gone out on a weak limb in
ethics this time, and people
around the world have begun to
see that Israel is not living up to
its creed.
