Jewish politicos are increasing-
ly uneasy about the race in the
4th congressional district in
Georgia, where Rep. Cynthia
McKinney, a black incumbent
who has frequently locked horns
with the Jewish community, is
facing a Jewish challenger in a
demographically confused dis-
trict.
Ms. McKinney's father, a state
representative, recently called
challenger Jon Mitnick a "racist
Jew," and charged that Mr. Mit-
nick had received big campaign
contributions from the Anti-
Defamation League and the
American Jewish Congress, al-
legations that were quickly dis-
missed.
The latter charge is particu-
larly sensitive because a number
of Jewish groups have opposed
race-based congressional dis-
tricts; Ms. McKinney lost her old
black-majority district after it
was ruled unconstitutional in a
Supreme Court decision last
year.
Ms. McKinney quickly dis-
avowed her father's comments
and dismissed him from the cam-

The incumbent has been crit-
icized for refusing to join the con-
gressional chorus blasting- Nation
of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan.
But the legislator also has
worked hard in the past two
years to build bridges to the pro-
Israel community.
Jewish political professionals
believe that Ms. McKinney still
has the edge in November; they
are wary of too-visible support for
the challenger.
Jews comprise about 7 percent
of the redrawn district, African-
Americans about 32 percent.
"Mitnick is a newcomer with
a lot of potential, but realistical-
ly, it's going to be hard to unseat
McKinney," said a pro-Israel
politico in Washington. "There's
a hope that she will continue the
outreach to the Jewish commu-
nity that she's started in the last
year; it could be counterproduc-
tive for Jewish and pro-Israel
groups to stand out in the effort
to defeat her, although the Jews
in the district are almost certain
to vote heavily for Mitnick."
And in California, a Jewish
Democrat who held on to her seat
by a handful of votes in the 1994
Republican earthquake may
have a less stressful voting day
in-two weeks.
Rep. Jane Harman has
emerged as an important sup-
porter of Israel on the House Na-
tional Security Committee;
according to pro-Israel lobbyists,
she played a significant role in
protecting a number of provisions
important to Israel in the recent
defense appropriations bill. ❑
