Tomatoes Make
Good Things Better
ILENE SPECTOR
SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS
The French call the tomato
"pomme d'amour," or apple of love.
It is said that Sir Walter Raleigh
gave a tomato to Queen Elizabeth
I as a special love gift.
Tomatoes most likely originat-
ed in the Bolivian region of the An-
des, in South America, then was
spread northward into Central
America and Mexico by the Indi-
ans.
Italians were probably the first
Europeans to eat the tomato as
early as 1550 and by the mid-18th
century it became a mainstay of
Italian cooking. Tomatoes re-
mained unknown to Americans
