It's a room with a vaulted ceiling, thick stone floor and massive banquet table in the center. But what is also striking about the Knights Chamber, as it is called, is the large and mod- em bronze menorah which sits on the table. Other works of art also adorn the Knights Chamber, including an Egyptian sphinx with a small bird perched on its head. This blend of medieval am- biance and modern art is part of what makes the Ilana Goor Mu- seum in Old Jaffa so intriguing. Newly opened one year ago, the museum is named for its artist-owner, who is also an art collector. She has transformed her own private residence into an art museum, displaying her own work and her extensive col- lection of other artists' works. They are housed in a hand- some stone building situated on a hillside overlooking the Mediterranean and the ancient port of Jaffa. Inside, the build- ing's design is equally striking, with its arches, cloisters, sky- lights, staircases, balconies. The building is so distinctive that it would be worth visiting in its own right. But it also offers a whole array of works of art — sculptures, paintings, decorative crafts, even furniture. ❑
