THE DETRO

RABBI DEBRA ORENSTEIN

32

Throughout the generations, Jews
have placed learning at the core of
their religious identity. Exciting
teachers and scholars are critical as
they invigorate and challenge stu-
dents of all ages. The Conservative
Movement Scholar In Residence
Program, made possible through
the support of the Federation Max
M. Fisher Jewish Community Foun-
dation, the Detroit Friends of the
Jewish Theological Seminary and
the United Synagogue of Conser-
vative Judaism, Michigan region, will
stimulate all Jews to actively re-con-
nect to the sources of our tradition:
God, Israel and the Torah.
This year's Scholar, Rabbi Debra
Orenstein, received her rabbinic or-
dination from the Jewish Theologi-
cal Seminary. She is currently serving
as a Senior Fellow at the Wilstein In-
stitute of Jewish Policy Studies in
southern California. A seventh gen-
eration rabbi, she co-authored From
Generation to Generation, a col-
lection of sermons and Bible corn-
mentaries with her late grandfather,
Rabbi Israel Mowshowitz, z I. Rabbi
Orenstein has also taught and writ-
ten extensively on issues of Jewish
spirituality and gender studies. She
is the editor of two volumes entitled
Lifecycles: Jewish Women. The
first volume, published in 1994, fo-
cuses on life passages and person-
al milestones for women. The
second volume is scheduled for re-
lease this fall and examines issues
of sexuality, spirituality and identity
as they parallel themes of the Torah.
Rabbi Orenstein is blessed with a
unique sensibility that allows her to
identify with the attempt on the part
of many American Jews to use their
tradition to deal with the issues that
lie at the heart of the human expe-
rience-the seach for meaning in
their lives, the need to deal with
pain, anxiety, intimacy, guilt and
values.
