ancestral shtetl synagogue in
Ilza. During a visit last July to
Poland, she was able to light a
yizkor candle and say prayers at
the synagogue of her grandpar-
ents.
"I am the last Jew to ever be
in the synagogue here in Ilza,"
she wrote in a manuscript. "I will
remember and tell the tale."
For Mrs. Starkman, genealo-

and, as she says, her place in life.

He was able to find a half-sis-

There is even more to Mr. Ros-

She explains how the pripetchuk
provided warmth to European
Jews against cold winters. It was
a hearth in what they thought
was a safe harbor of Jewish life.
She holds the brick, and one can
easily see that the warmth is still
provided.
Stephen M. Rosman, who is
chairing the Kurzweil lecture
and the Saturday event, has
passenger ship which brought
family members to America.
Mr. Rosman explains why he
became involved with his family
genealogy. "Look, I was 40. I was
having a midlife crisis," said Mr.
Rosman. "This is an opportunity
for people to do something dif-
ferent, but do something so
worthwhile. I mean, to hold in
your hand your grandfather's
ship record is incredible." 0
