Temple Kol Ami in West Bloom-
field is sponsoring a family tour
of Israel during December, de-
parting Detroit on Dec. 17 and re-
turning Jan. 1.
Rabbi Norm Roman, who has
led 12 groups to Israel since the
1970s—including busses on the
Michigan Miracle Mission and
Miracle Mission for Teens —
along with expert tour guide Mike
Rogoff of Jerusalem (area editor
of the Israel edition of Fodor's
Guide) will lead the tour. .
Highlights of the trip will be
two Shabbat weekends in
Jerusalem, special bar/bat mitz-
vah and marriage reconsecration
ceremonies, informal meetings
with Israelis from the Reform
movement and Detroit's Part-
nership 2000 Region, tree plant-
ing, a memorial service for the
late Prime Minister Yitzhak Ra-
bin, joining an archeological dig
for a day, and an optional end-of-
the-trip extension to Eilat.
The projected cost of $3,050
(per person, double occupancy) in-
cludes roundtrip airfare, all trans-
fers and luggage assistance,
deluxe hotels (Radisson Moriah
chain and kibbutz guest house),
full touring and admission fees,
breakfast daily and many din-
ners. Youth receive a reduction
in airfare.

My driver turned onto a nonde-
script street in Istanbul, Turkey,
and stopped.
It took me a few minutes to see
that among the colorful fruit shops
and bakeries was our destination:
A gray stone building that sat un-
ceremoniously on the narrow
street.
The Neve Shalom Synagogue,
which was opened in 1951 on the
original site of the 15th century
Aragon Synagogue, had wrought
iron gates featuring inserts of large
Stars of David. But unless you
knew that this was your stop, it
could easily have gone unnoticed.
Although I had arranged to
come in advance, before I was al-
lowed through the large doorway
I was asked for my passport. My
guide/translator had to produce
his identification papers.
