he driver stopped in front
of the majestic Central
Synagogue in Moscow.
The heavy front doors
were locked. Entry was by a
smaller door off to the side.
The cold, unheated lobby (it
was in January) was in disre-
pair, waiting to be renovated.
Approaching a door that stood
slightly ajar, I saw a few men in
tallitot and kippot waiting for
some others to arrive before
starting the evening prayers.
Alexander, the shamus,
showed me around. The nonde-
script chapel gave no indication
that the large shul would be so
grand. Several crystal chande-
liers lit the shul, which Alexan-
der told me, is 120 years old.
"During the decades,". he said,
"there has never been any dam-
age except for 'a little' due to
original building infractions." As
foreandalism, he says no, just
a few broken windows and, well,
yes, a homemade bomb last year

that didn't go off.
The Torahs are very old and
during the war remained in the
shul. The synagogue was nev-
er closed during the wars, says
Alexander.
Those who come here now are
mainly the old men. But on the
High Holidays, the synagogue
is full with foreigners who are
either living and working in the
Moscow area or just passing
through. Their donations help
with the major part of the up-
keep. Regular attendance
doesn't exist, although there are
two rabbis.
The painted ceiling and walls
are a surprise to me. I've never
seen such an elaborate, hand-
painted decoration in such de-
tail in a synagogue.
The services were about to be-
gin and so I took my leave,
promising to spread the word of
the needed funds for restoration
for this majestic structure. Ill
