Plantar fascitis, an inflammato-
ry condition that impairs the mus-
cles and ligaments that support
the arch of the foot, can sabotage
any fitness regimen from the
ground up.
The quickest fix is surgery, cut-
ting tissue on the bottom of the
heel to relieve the chronic ten-
dinitis. But a surgeon's scalpel can
do more harm than good, two re-
cent studies suggest.
Dr. Harold Kitaoka of the
Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.,
found that the surgery can flat-
ten the arch of some patients.
Dr. Frederick Reeve of Dayton,
Ohio, concluded that surgery
could damage a nerve that con-
trols a muscle responsible for
moving the little toe.
Your safest alternative? A one-
quarter-inch heel lift in each shoe,
exercises to stretch the calf mus-
cles and Achilles tendons, and the
application of ice to reduce in-
flammation.
The next step: wearing foot ap-
pliances, or customized orthotics
prescribed by foot professionals.

Snack Attacked

With the government approval of
the fat-substitute Olestra, Proc-
ter and Gamble will be unloading
a new generation of products on
the snack food marketplace.
But while it has a green light
from the U.S. Food and Drug Ad-
ministration, Olestra is more than
the watchdog Physicians Com-
mittee for Responsible Medicine
can stomach.
The fat substitute, known
generically as "sucrose polyester,"
reinforces the taste for fat, rather
than encouraging us to adapt to
the tastes of lower-fat foods, says
the council.
Another caveat: Olestra leach-
es fat-soluble vitamins A D, E and
K from the body, along with such
nutrients as beta carotene. ❑
