Rock the Planet has 45 titles to date, with one to two added monthly, including Rockin' Ladies of the Eighties, Disco Fever and Party Time Fifties, with such hits as 'That'll Be the Day" by the Crickets, Bobby Darin's "Mack the Knife" and others. "Virtually every single song on all the albums are hits," Mr. Schwartz said. "We use the biggest songs by the biggest artists. "We want people to like nine of the 10 songs on the album instead of buying a whole CD for just one song. We're value driven: We give the customer what he wants, with no surpris- es." The 43-year-old entrepreneur got his start in the music biz at Troy's Handleman Co. — the largest music distribution com- pany in North America — where he worked summers during high school. He received his bachelor's degree from Wesleyan Univer- sity in Connecticut and a mas- ter of business administration degree from the University of California. Returning to his native De- troit, Mr. Schwartz embarked upon a 15-year career at Han- dleman, where he met Mr. Stevens. The last position he held at Handleman was vice president of marketing. In the year since the two have become their own bosses, their company has exceeded $10 mil- lion in sales. Coyote's products can be found in all major music stores, like Musicland, Harmo- ny House and Media Play, and Handleman is a supplier of its hits collections. "They're our No. 1 clients. [Dave and I] left the house, but we're still part of the family," he laughed. "From the day I was hired at Handleman, I told them I want- ed to learn what I could from them, but ultimately I wanted to be an entrepreneur. I wanted to try this on my own." ❑ JOLT Acquires U.S. Company Jerusalem (JPFS) — Jerusalem- based JOLT Ltd., a supplier of wireless optical communications, has acquired Laser Communica- tions Inc. of Lancaster, Pa., and formed a new company known as AirOptics.
