"OUTSTANDING"

This past weekend's Super Sun-
day kickoff to our community's
1997 Allied Jewish Campaign ex-
emplified everything that is good
about our community. With the
record turnout of volunteers,
groups, staff and donors, our com-
munity showed just how accu-
rately Detroit lives the mitzvah
of tzedakah and the belief in
tikkun olam.
A major thank-you is owed to
the staff who prepared us for
Sunday, to the groups of volun-
teers who made phone calls and
did clerical work, and especially
to the thousands of donors who
made their generous gifts to the
Allied Jewish Campaign. Every-
one's collaborative efforts truly
demonstrated just how much "No
Gift Touches More Lives!"

On Sept. 25 and 26, 15 Israeli sol-
diers were killed with bullets and
weapons that the Israeli govern-
ment itself had turned over to the
Palestinian Authority. Many of

these soldiers were killed when
a mob of Palestinian Arabs, sup-
ported by the armed Palestinian
police, attacked the Tomb of
Joseph and the Old Yoseph Chai
Cemetery in the city of Nablus.
This is a "protected site," accord-
ing to the Oslo Agreement.
These facts have all been pub-
licized in the press. Less well
known is the following: When the
Palestinian police entered the
compound, they got ready to de-
stroy the seminary. The Israeli
commander, on site, begged them
to spare at least the Torah scrolls.
They then allowed two Israeli sol-
diers, clad in tallitot, to carry the
Torahs down into a secure area
in the tomb itself. The Palestin-
ian police proceeded to torch the
Bet Hamedresh of the seminary.
The flames destroyed Bibles,
prayer books and volumes of the
Talmud and many other holy
books, while Israeli soldiers sat
helplessly in the next room.
Our sages tell us that the evil
King Ahab merited kingship and
even a place in paradise despite
his wickedness because he upheld
the honor and dignity of the peo-
ple of Israel. When Ahab was un-
der siege by King Ben Hadad of
Syria, he refused to turn over the
Holy Scriptures (Babylonian Tal-
mud tractates Sanhedrin, pages
102-104, Moed-Hatan, page 28).
One can only imagine the me-
dia din that would have resulted
had Israeli soldiers done this to
scriptures that are sacred to Mus-
lims. It might have elicited an
outraged editorial or two from our
own Jewish News, and rightly so.
Where is The Jewish News when
our holy places are desecrated?
The policies of the former Ra-
bin-Peres government have, in-
deed, returned us to the dark
days of Jewish powerlessness and
degradation.
