term, Rabbi Cohen is also looking
to the future. A long-term plan-
ning committee will be convened
soon to lay out direction for the
next several years.
Projects in the planning stages
include Arab-Jewish, black-Jew-
ish and Catholic-Jewish dialogues.
Rabbi Cohen also hopes to hold
a student retreat, subsidize Israel
trips, host a multicultural crafts
fair and bring in Rabbi Larry
Kushner, an author on spiritual-
ity.
Rabbi Cohen, a Reform rabbi,
came to East Lansing from
Boston. He earned his doctorate
in Jewish philosophy from Bran-
deis University. He taught Jew-
ish studies at the University of
Massachusetts and previously
served as administrator of an af-
ternoon religious school. His wife,
Beth Gamburg, and two daugh-
ters, Elly, 13, and Tslia, 9, remain
in Boston. They will join him in
East Lansing in the spring.
Rabbi Cohen took the MSU
post because `Tm impressed with

Jewish tradition teaches that we are obligated to care for one
another. We must build bridges of understanding between Jews and
strengthen the ties which bind us together.

the fact that the community
placed this Hillel on the front
burner in terms of financial and
professional support."
Because an executive director
is in place, and because the orga-
nization has a revamped board,
the Jewish Federation of Metro-
politan Detroit increased its an-
nual Campaign allocation to the
East Lansing Hillel by 25 percent.
That translated into a total of
$138,850 for the organization this
year.
Rabbi Cohen replaces Dr. Mark
Finkelstein, who in April 1995 left
the MSU Hillel after seven years
as director. Two months later,
Federation, the local Hillel board
and the Hillel Foundation for Jew-
ish Campus Life, began a formal
search process.
"Phil seems to be very well re-
ceived by the [MSU] students and
faculty," said Howard Neistein,
Federation's director of planning
and agency relations. "It's a little
early to say what will happen, but
people are feeling positive." ❑
