It happened again.
It was Friday afternoon and
evening was approaching fast. I
had run out of candles, wine,
challah and had nothing to eat
for dinner. In short, I was pan-
icked.
I swung into the Farmer Jack
parking lot and began running
through the appropriate aisles.
Got the candles, the wine, the
bread and galloped toward pro-
duce when all of a sudden, out of
the corner of my eye, I saw my
salvation.
There, nestled in the corner of
the kosher freezer section, was
the last Empire Kosher Express (--
Meals kit for chicken fajitas. I had
found dinner at last.
The newest creation from the
kosher poultry giant landed on
the shelves of area supermarkets
at the end of the holidays. Mar-
keted as a quick and easy meal
to prepare for busy families, it
comes in three varieties — an
Oriental stir fry, Mexican chick-
en fajitas and an Italian chicken c
pasta dish.
For $9.99, the bright green bag
bearing a photo of the prepared
meal promises an easy-to-prepare
dinner with all of the fixings —
pre-cooked chicken, chopped and
vibrantly colored vegetables,
sauce and either rice, tortillas or
rotini pasta.
While each of the meals is low
in fat and cholesterol, they are all c:
high in sodium, with 400 to 500
milligrams per one-cup serving.
The Rating:
I had heard so much about the
Empire Kosher Express Meals
before I bought one.
"They're so easy to make,"
raved one friend. "You can take
them with you on a trip where
there is no kosher restaurant,"c_t,
praised another. "You won't be
able to find them anywhere," cau-
tioned still another person. "They
sell out so fast."
Interestingly enough, no one
raved about the quality. Now I
know why: They aren't very
good.
This fact surprised me, most-
ly because these meals are tar- c,
geted right at my family. With -
three dogs, a small child and a
home, two full-time wage earn-
ers have little time left over at the
end of the week to plan healthy,
well-balanced meals, let alone
prepare them. You'd think the
manufacturers would go the ex-
tra mile quality-wise to appeal to
this large demographic.
I'll give the folks at Empire
this: The directions are easy to
follow and the meal does cook up
quickly. But that is where the
praise ends.
