Israelis might be divided about
Prime Minister Binyamin Ne-
tanyahu's handling of the recent
Hasmonean tunnel affair and
subsequent armed clashes with
the Palestinian police, but there's
strong consensus about the dam-
age it has done to relations with
Jordan. As such, Israel is mov-
ing more cautiously on dealing
with the latest potential trigger
incident.
Last week, New York Times
columnist Thomas Friedman dis-
closed how King Hussein angri-
ly lectured the prime minister
during the Washington summit.
In recent months, the genteel
King Hussein had gone out on a
limb for Mr. Netanyahu by ask-
ing his Arab colleagues to give
the Israeli time to prove his hon-
orable intentions.
Israelis were even more mor-
tified after the summit when
King Hussein told a London-
based Arabic newspaper, "If
there's no peace in the area,
Prime Minister Netanyahu will
have to carry a gas mask with
him, as in the days of the Gulf
War."
What riled his majesty was
not just Mr. Netanyahu's foot-
dragging on implementing agree-
ments with the Palestinians, but
his opening of the Hasmonean
tunnel without consulting Jor-
dan, according to Dr. Marwan
Muasher, Jordanian minister of
information and a former am-
bassador to Israel.
In an official protest, Amman
characterized the tunnel move
as a violation of the Israeli-Jor-
danian peace agreement, which
recognizes King Hussein's spe-
cial status as the patron of
Jerusalem's Muslim holy places.
Particularly infuriating the
Jordanians was that Dr. Dore
Gold, Mr. Netanyahu's political
adviser, had visited King Hus-
sein the day before the new exit
was opened. He had not said a
word about it.
A few months earlier, the new
government also had em-
barassed Jordan's leader by an-
nouncing the end of a building
freeze on Israeli settlements in
the West Bank and Gaza.
The timing had left the king
open to charges of collusion with
Israel. The same charges, by oth-
er Arab states, were lodged at
Egyptian President Hosni
Mubarak in 1982 when Israeli
forces invaded Lebanon just af-
ter a meeting with then-Israel
Prime Minister Menachem Be-
gin.
