Israel's president tries to thaw the peace talks,
but Yassir Arafat's hand is now on the thermostat.

zer Weizman is like a man who has shed 10 years.
After three years of trying to create a role as the
"People's President," he has had the job he likes
best — the yeast in the loaf of Israel's peace diplo-
macy — thrust upon him. And he is revelling in it.
Last week, the 72-year-old president hosted Pales-
tinian Authority President Yassir Arafat at his villa in
Caesarea. This week, he was in Cairo visiting his old
friend of the Begin-Sadat era, President Hosni Mubarak
of Egypt. Any day, he is expected in Amman for a tete-
