community-center. In 1954, a
substantial private donation
was made and the building was
established.
On the wall just before the
entrance are plaques of con-
tributors' names. One wonders
if there is a family connection
with Canadian families.
At the entrance, on a table, is
a basket filled with kippot. Odd
chairs, perhaps 75, are placed
facing the bimah. A service in
English and Hebrew is held
every Friday evening and Sat-
urday morning. On the High
Holy Days and at the few mar-
riages, brit or bar mitzvah cer-
emonies, there are usually large
crowds.
Chana enthusiastically told
me that on Sunday many
dren are now coming for He-
brew lessons.
The annex has a library on
Judaism and a small cemetery
is next to the synagogue.
Before leaving Chana to her
daily duties, I asked how Jews
fared in a city of Hindus and
Muslims.
"We're treated very well," she
said.
The freedom to worship is
echoed by my Hindu driver. In
fact, many Jews have risen to
high ranks in the government
of India.
The main point is that the In-
dian Jews maintained their
identity over the centuries and
have not allowed themselves to
become assimilated. One expla-
nation is that the Hindu concept
3 of "dharma" requires one to re-
main "and fulfill the duties of
the station where Providence
has placed you."
As I left, I felt an over-
whelming sense of awe, know-
ing that in this far-away
country, in this densely popu-
lated city, is a small piece of
Jewish history. El]
