oming as I do from a fami-
ly who settled in the remote
Shetland Islands, I wasn't
at all surprised to find a
flourishing Jewish community in
Oslo, Norway.
And an afternoon spent with
Herman Kahan, the undisputed
leader of the community, and his
wife Esther, filled me in on how
700 Jews live and are respected
in a northern country where more
than 88 percent of the population
belong to the Evangelical. Luther-
an State Church.
The whitewashed synagogue at
13 Bergstein St. was built in 1920.
Sandwiched between stately
homes, it sparkles in the sunshine
like a jewel. Along with the com-
munity center, it is the focal point
of Oslo's Jewish life.
Before World War II, Norway
was home to about 1,800 Jews, in-
cluding several hundred who had
fled Germany to escape the Holo-
caust. When Norway was invad-
ed, more than 900 escaped to
Sweden with the help of the Nor-
wegian underground. However,
in 1942, those who remained were
singled out by the Germans and
dealt with even more harshly than
other Norwegians.
After the war, only 12 of those
survived. A few, such as Else
Hercz, had lived through the
heinous events hidden in a hospi-
tal. The Norwegian government,
in an effort to re-establish the pre-
war Jewish community, opened
their doors to several hundred
refugees so that today Norway is
home to about 1,000 Jews.
Just liberated from Auschwitz,
the young, malnourished Herman
Kahan came to Oslo almost by ac-
cident. "My father had died only
10 days after we were liberated,"
he tells me. "I had a visa for Amer-
ica but I was told that my sister
was alive and living in Norway so
I came here."
Now, some 50 years later, jovial
and tanned from years of skiing
and sailing, Mr. Kahan recalls
that his father had insisted that
besides studying Torah, each per-
son should have another skill.
"I learned to knit socks and
that's how I started out to make a
living," he says with a laugh, re-
membering.
He met his wife Esther, raised
five children and as the owner of
four factories, became the largest
manufacturer of woolen socks in
