AWARDED CERTIFICATE BY GIA

Republican Andrew Raczkws-
ki and Democrat Stephen Dibert,
both miming in the 37th District
encompassing the Farmington
and Farmington Hills area, and
Republican Patricia Godchaux
and Democrat Lynn Shecter,
running in the 40th District that
includes Bloomfield Township,
Bloomfield Hills, Birmingham,
Southfield Township and Sylvan
Lake, were all present.
Retiring incumbents in all
three districts created open seats.
A majority of questions from
the audience and the moderator
focused on education, particularly
school funding. Candidates, with
the exception of Mr. Fracassi,
spoke out against using vouch-
ers for private schools.
Mr. Fracassi said he is moral-
ly against abortion but believes
the state is not in a position to
take such rights away from
women. Others echoed his pro-
choice sentiments, except Mr.
Raczkwoski.
"We are a society that dispos-
es of things when we are done
with them," he said. "What's
next? Will we throw away the el-
derly one day?"
The forum was presented by
the Metropolitan Detroit Coun-
cil of Synagogues and Temples.
A second forum, scheduled for
Sunday, Oct. 20, will include can-
didates for the U.S. Senate and
for the 11th and 12th Congres-
sional Districts. Temple Israel
will host the Oct. 20 event at 10
a.m. ❑

sisted suicide needs to be ad-
dressed on the state level.
"This issue," he said, "will not
be resolved in Oakland County.
We don't have the tools to deal
with it. There are pieces of pend-
ing legislation in Lansing that
can address it."
Mr. Kaplan said there has to
be a law in the books before Dr.
Kevorkian can be prosecuted.
"The courts are for robbers,
murderers and rapists," Mr. Ka-
plan said. "This is not an issue
for judges to decide."
Perhaps the biggest question
on everyone's mind, judging by
audience questions, was the con-
dition of Oakland County's roads.
Mr. Alexander told the audi-
ence the Oakland County Road
Commission is a separate entity
and operates on its own. The so-
lution, he said, is in the Michigan
Legislature. Democratic chal-
lenger Edward T. Hamilton, a
neophyte to politics, said he be-
lieves the state and county have
the money to fix the county's
roads and a gas tax is an unnec-
essary measure.
During the second part of the
event, candidates for state rep-
resentative in three local districts
presented their views on areas
such as school funding and abor-
tion.
Participants included 36th
District candidates Roderick J.
Fracassi, a Republican, and De-
mocrat Nancy Quarles. The dis-
trict includes Southfield and
Lathrup Village.

ost people don't think

about not being able to
have biological chil-
dren. But one in every
20 couples will experience this
trauma, and the numbers con-
tinue to grow.
One alternative is adoption.
Linda Yellin, a therapist and
consultant in Farmington Hills,
helps others deal with the inse-
curities and questions related to
adoption. She will be discussing
those issues 7-9 p.m. Wednes-
day, Oct. 9, at the Maple-Drake
Jewish Community Center dur-
ing a public meeting on "Ex-
ploring Adoption." '
The program will provide an
overview of the adoption process
and will explore th:: home study
and assessment procedures, in-
teractions with agencies, courts
and attorneys, adoption readi-
ness, special issues and adop-

tions in the United States and
overseas.
As an adoptee, Ms. Yellin was
reunited with her birth family
14 years ago and brings a
unique perspective to the sub-
ject.
Ms. Yellin contributes a great
deal of time to the metro Detroit
chapter of the Stars of David In-
ternational Organization, a na-
tional Jewish adoptive parent
support program.
The organization will hold its
first national Jewish adoption
conference Sunday, Oct. 27, in
Pikesville, Md.
Ms. Yellin will be one of the
keynote speakers and will be
making three presentations on
adoption.
