ERICA MEYER RAUZIN

SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

I'm sure staying fit is a fine idea.
I'm all for it. I'm even willing to
plan to do it, to purchase suitable
gear, and to discuss it with you
at length, just as soon as I finish
this nap.
There is something about be-
ing aggressively aerobic that
seems sort of non-Jewish, in the
traditional sense, like carpentry,
or sky-diving. There is nothing
wrong with it, per se, it just has
the sense of being added on, not
part of the basic package.
Now Jewish law does tell us
that the preservation of life is
important. One is even allowed
to break Shabbat to save a life.
The priority on preserving life in-
cludes maintaining a healthy
body. Jewish law discusses keep-
ing your physical health, and
many rabbis counsel against
smoking and other injurious
practices. But I'm not sure even
that includes an hour each day
at the gym, at least, not for me.
I'm into other kinds of exer-
cise, like marathon typing or
Olympic dishwashing. I've even
invented a few new sports, ap-
propriate for the working moth-
er.
The Tangle Tango: This in-
volves hanging up a teen-ager's
clothing after she's tried on
everything in her closet and
dumped it all on the bed in de-
spair. First you must sort out the
wire hangers, clinging to each
other in the closet. Then you
shake out the clothes, newest
and most expensive ones first,
and try to restore them to order.
If you want a more competitive
sport, try to accomplish this feat
while instructing, admonishing,
and including the teen-ager.
If you win; you might create a
child paragon who will under-
take all your ironing in sheer
gratitude for her wonderful
wardrobe. But don't hold your
breath.
If you lose, pay up; everything
has to go to the dry cleaner.
The Sock Sort: First you get
everyone's dirty laundry. Then
you wash, dry and fold it. This
already represents a workout I'd
like to see the next sweaty guy
in the gym manage while also
cooking three squares a day and
going to work. But that's not the
sport of it.
The fun part is that when you
finally have everything else fold-
ed and put away, you are left
with a mountain of random
socks, clinging together in stat-
ic electric joy, waiting for you to
be the yenta who makes match-
es between them.
I once had a cleaning lady who
