ERICA MEYER RAUZIN SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS
I
have accumulated a vast
number of books about rais-
ing children. First of all, we
have three children to raise.
Secondly, one of my big skills is
accumulating books. I am very
good at it.
Unfortunately, I can't claim to
read all the books I collect, and
some of the child-raising books
have gathered more dust than
attention. I am still giving shelf

learning games is hardly depri-
vation.
He does hate losing his bike
or being forbidden to play with
the dog or cat. As he gets older,
though, I have discovered a prac-
tical substitute for punishing
him: He can be bribed. This in-
nocent-looking, freckle-faced
bundle of charm is as corrupt as
a cartoon politician.
He can be bought. He even
stays bought. You pick the cur-
rency: candy, television time,
new sneakers, a back rub, and
he is as open to making a deal as
Monty Hall. There is almost
nothing he won't do for a half-
hour of TV plus a bag of M&Ms.
I think he'd paint the house for
a Hershey bar, but I'm afraid to
ask.
He does love to help; and one
of my favorite authors of child-
raising advice, Miriam Adahan,
would counsel me to build on
that positive note and bring him
along as Mommy's mitzvot boy
and big helper. So I try to do
that, too.
Adahan, author of several ex-
cellent family advice books, in-
cluding Raising Children to
Care, is one of the few authors
who provides solid child-raising
advice based on Judaism. The
steps she suggests, in this book
and others, including her new
series of handbooks, are based
on Halachah and on doing
mitzvot. She offers practical ap-
proaches to raising children ac-
cording to Judaic spiritual
principles.
Of course, no advice works 100
percent of the time. Adahan, and
others, suggest sometimes giv-
ing children choices within a lim-
ited context, to get them to make
appropriate decisions. A little
boy who doesn't want to wear his
yarmulke could be asked, "Do
you want to wear your red kip-
pah or your blue one," so he still
has autonomy, within the struc-
tured understanding that he
must wear a yarmulke.
I tried this approach with my
son when he asked me for a pop-
side right before dinner. When
I explained that he could have
one after dinner, he repeatedly
protested, so to divert him I
asked, "Will you want an orange
flavored popsicle or a grape?"
He didn't miss a beat. "How
many do you want me to have?"
he asked right back. "Two or
800?"
I see. Motherhood is full of
choices. I chose to go back to the
bookshelf. Uh, Miriam, could you
please run that technique by me
just one more time.
