THE THEATRICAL EXPERIENCE OF A DECADE!

Proudly Presents

AMERICAN ARTS

THE ESTER RACHEL KAMINSKA

this one about parenthood. Just
in time for him to play papa on
the little screen — a role lie's fa-
miliar with already at home.
Happily married for seven years
to Paula, a psychotherapist, and
the proud father of a son, Paul
Reiser is wedded to the notion
of providing interesting TV.
But the "must-see TV"
episodes involving the deterio-
ration of his series marriage last
season, with both Paul and
Jamie experimenting with infi-
delity, may have left some view-
ers feeling cheated.
After all, Paul and Jamie, it's
like learning Lucy left Ricky for
Fred Mertz.

JEWISH
THEATRE

Change is important to Reis-
er. But isn't there a risk that
adding a baby to the formula
will detract from the Buchmans'
give-and-take?
"Our hope is that it'll suck the
humor right out," he laughs.
Reiser rises to the occasion.
After all, there will be new chal-
lenges: Does the baby get raised
Jewish? As Reiser has said of
Paul and Jamie, "He isn't nec-
essarily Jewish, and she is not
a WASP. And this show is no
`Bridget Loves Bernie.' "
What it is, is a big hit, and
Reiser says that this season's
"Mad About You" will still focus
on the couple. So does that mean

OCTOBER 16 - NOVEMBER 17

Mel Brooks is featured as Paul Buchman's (Paul Reiser) uncle.

"Yeah, it did get serious,"
says Reiser of the show's con-
cluding chapters last season.
"But that was something that
we had always intended to do,
since the inception of the show.
"I think certain scars are al-
ways there. And whether
they're done as a tease or done
as a serious thing, the intent
was always that it would
strengthen their relationship,
that they would learn they
must guard the fort — we can't
let things be taken for grant-
ed."
Paul Reiser is not one to take
anything for granted. He was
reportedly steamed when his
show was moved last season to
Sunday night from the power-
house Thursday lineup. Now,
the Tuesday night spot seems
to please him.

that the baby is going to disap-
pear once the pregnancy is over,
like Avery on "Murphy Brown"?
"Actually, Candy Bergen, star
of 'Murphy Brown,' will be baby-
sitting for two seasons," says
Reiser with a smile.
The actors certainly heard
quite a bit about their charac-
ters' on-set philandering. Punch
lines begat punches. "I got hit
by people," says Reiser.
One of the show's strengths
has always been its repartee —
two young people in love, mad
about each other, in the crazy
city of New York. Now, baby
makes three, and Paul Reiser's
ready for the diaper derby.
By the way, Paul, when will
the baby arrive? In February for
sweeps month, perhaps?
"Whatever's good for you," he
deadpans. ❑
