Cynthia McDonald, nurse
manager of NICU, decided to go
into the field before graduating
from<nursing school. She made
the rounds in the hospital in
which she trained, trying out de-
partments. It wasn't until she
made it to pediatric intensive
care, later NICU, that she found
something she liked.
"It was too easy in the well-
baby nursery," she said, as she
sifted through the latest ship-
ment of food and medications for
the NICU charges. "You just feed
them and change them."

Ms. Jenkins knows that sen-
sation well. There are times when
she, a mother of three healthy
adults, feels like she can't take an-
other shift. But her love of both
her patients and her work keeps
her going.
"I like to be there in the begin-
ning of a life," Ms. Jenkins said.
"You have the power to do little
things to make [the babies'] lives
easier."
