hen Nabisco first in-

Well line of food items
a few years ago, cus-
tomers would literally stock up
on the fat-free Devil's Food cook-
ies, fighting each other in the
grocery store over who had the
right to shell out $3 for the last
box on the shelves.
Since then, there has been a
virtual explosion in fat-free and
reduced-fat items, from pizza to
pretzels, cookies to cakes. And
ready-to-make mixes are no ex-
ception.
Through a partnership that
was born earlier in the year, Pills-
bury, owner of that cute little
dough boy, is now the manufac-
turer of a new line of SnackWell's
mixes. The line debuted in the
spring with the Low Fat Fudge
Brownie Mix, which quickly over-
took General Mills' low-fat
brownie mix for the No. 1 spot in
the low-fat brownie category.
The brownies probably won't
become fat-free in the near fu-
ture, said Marlene Johnson, a
spokesperson for the Pillsbury
SnackWell's line.
"I won't say never," she said.
"We find that, generally, we can
deliver a better quality product
as low-fat than if it is no-fat."
With 2.5 grams of fat per serv-
ing, the chocolate treats rack up
150 calories, no cholesterol, 29
grams of carbohydrates, one

zero nutritional value. But hey,
what do you want from a brown-
ie?
The Fudge Brownie Mix is un-
der the supervision of the
kashruth division of the Union
of Orthodox Jewish Congrega-
tions of America.
In the next month, the Pills-
bury SnackWell's line will ex-
pand to include a fat-free
blueberry muffin mix and low
fat-cake mixes, • frostings, an-
other brownie mix and two re-
frigerator cookie dough flavors:
chocolate chip and fudge. Except
for the cookie dough and blue-
berry muffin mixes, all of the
items will also be kosher under
OU supervision.
SnackWells can be purchased
in every major grocery store in
the area, although newer prod-
ucts may take time to get to the
shelves. We purchased our box
at the 7-11 convenience store on
Franklin Road between North-
western and Bell for $1.99.
The Rating:
This Kosher Bites consumer
was wandering through 7-11 at
8:30 one morning, foraging for
something to whet a breakfast
appetite, when all of the sudden
the green box on the brownie-mix
shelf practically tackled me. The
moist, cakey-looking brownies
looked delicious and with the
promise of lower fat, , who could
resist?
